LIBRARY SERVICES
Central Library
Central Library was established in 1982 in order to support academic and research activities. Then in 2004, the library was moved into the main campus of the University, currently being the largest University Library in Ankara in terms of its physical capacity. Besides, approximately 10.431 periodicals do have an electronic access, while there are 9 CD-ROMs used for scanning purposes and 18 online data bases.
Besides the books, there are 34.169 slides, 462 diskettes, 653 CDs, 147 sound tapes, 3 records, 164 video-cassettes, 102 film slides, 1 microfilm, 9 microfiches, 18 maps, 5 sketches, and 2 plans. Furthermore, 8000-10000 volume new publications are added to the collection each year.
In the Central Library, readers have the opportunity to study with around 200 computers, while using internet for scientific purposes, benefiting from online data-bases and having access to the subscribed electronic periodicals from the OPAC terminals. There, they can make searches through library's catalogue, and also through the web-page of the Central Library without necessarily going to the library.
Books on health and medical sciences, NLM (National Library of Medicine) as well as books on other various topics are arranged according to the LCCS (Library of Congress Classification System) and offered to the service of users. Computers are used actively for membership activities, to maintain the circulation of publications more efficiently and to complete the lending operations in a shorter time.
Library services are carried out not only by the permanent staff, but also with the involvement of scholars who work part-time in return for a scholarship.
"Inter-library loans" services are maintained in collaboration with the Library of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, METU (Middle East Technical University) Library, Library of the Hacettepe University, ULAKBÝM Library. This project is called "OBES", under which photocopies of the demanded articles are delivered to the members of above universities for a small fee and within 3 days.
In the beginning of each academic year, freshmen are offered orientation programs in relation to the library services.
The Unit Libraries
Other than the Central Library, there are other libraries specialised in the related fields, such as the Library of Engineering-Architecture, Education, Library of Communication and Technical Education.
